Book AppointmentWhat Happens During a Contact Lens Exam?
Our process for fitting contact lenses begins with a thorough eye exam. It’s essential to establish your prescription for corrective lenses before fitting you with contact lenses, just as we would if you were getting glasses.
Our comprehensive eye exam determines your prescription and checks for any underlying eye health issues. We carefully evaluate your eyes to find the right lenses for your needs.
Thorough Contact Lens Measurements & Fittings
We understand that every patient’s eyes are unique, so we take precise measurements to help your contact lenses fit comfortably and safely.
These measurements can include:
- Corneal curvature measurements, which measure the clear front surface of your eye
- Pupil and iris size measurements, which measure the size of the coloured part of your eye
- Tear film evaluations, which help our team determine if you have adequate tear film to keep your lenses and cornea hydrated during wear
The wrong size or shape of contact lenses can cause discomfort, irritation, and even damage to your eyes.
Trial Lenses & Follow-Up Visits
Part of your contact lens fitting is testing trial lenses and scheduling follow-up care. During your trial period, you’ll wear the lenses for around 15 minutes while we evaluate the position and movement of the lens on your eye. You will also get a feel for the lenses, and our team will monitor your comfort.
We recommend follow-up visits after your initial fitting to confirm that your lenses continue to feel comfortable, fit you properly and that your eyes can tolerate contact lens wear.
Our Contact Lens Options
Contact lenses fall under 2 main categories, soft contact lenses and rigid gas-permeable (RGP). Under these main categories are different types of contacts, such as multifocal lenses.
Our team works with you to determine the best lenses for your unique visual needs, along with a thorough fitting process to help you find the right fit.
Soft Contact Lenses
Soft contact lenses are made from a flexible, water-containing material that conforms to the shape of your eye. They come in a variety of styles and designs, including daily disposable, bi-weekly, and monthly replacement schedules.
One of the biggest advantages of soft contact lenses is their comfort. The pliable material allows for a comfortable fit and for a large amount of oxygen to reach the cornea, which can prevent dryness and discomfort.
Multifocal Contact Lenses
Multifocal contact lenses can feature a bifocal or trifocal design with different lens powers to correct vision at different distances. Multifocal lenses can help correct presbyopia, a refractive error that makes it difficult for middle-aged and older adults to see things up close. This vision condition can make activities like reading more challenging.
Multifocal contacts can help replace reading glasses.
Rigid-Gas Permeable Lenses
Rigid-gas permeable (RGP) lenses, also known as “hard” contact lenses, offer a unique blend of comfort and clarity. These lenses are made from a durable, oxygen-permeable material that maintains its shape while on the eye, providing crisp, clear vision, regardless of the degree of correction required.
RGP lenses are ideal for individuals with astigmatism or presbyopia.
Toric Contact Lenses
Toric contact lenses are specifically designed to address astigmatism. Astigmatism arises from a different curvature of the cornea or lens in your eye, which can blur or distort vision. Toric lenses correct this by providing varying refractive powers on the horizontal and vertical orientations, effectively reshaping the cornea to provide clear, sharp vision.
